This year on 25 June 2018, Hon. Mr. Peter Dutton, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Immigration and Border Protection announced the new Points Test Score requirement (new Pool and Pass marks) applicable to GSM Visa subclasses:
- Skilled-Independent (Permanent) Subclass 189
- Skilled-Nominated (Permanent) Subclass 190
- Skilled-Regional Sponsored (Provisional) Subclass 489
The important date to note is 1 July 2018. This is the date on which this new points test score (pool and pass mark) change will be applied to certain visa subclasses based on the transitional provisions. The new pool and pass mark will now be 65 instead of 60.
The transitional provisions provided are as follows:
- For visa applications made on or after 1 July 2018 in response to an invitation given on or after 1 July 2018, the new points test score required (pool and pass mark required) will be 65 points.
- For visa applications made before, on or after 1 July 2018 in response to an invitation given prior to 1 July 2018, the points test score required (pool and pass mark required) remains at 60 point
The Australian government and representatives from the Department of Home Affairs have proposed that in response to growing voter frustration with congestion and infrastructure strain in Sydney and Melbourne, cutting Australia’s migration cap from 190,000 to 160,000. Just under 162,5000 people were accepted in Australia in the past year, this means that from 2019 there may be a significant reduction in immigrants entering Australia.
However, The Northern Territory wants more people to come and live up north and is offering cash incentives to families, couples and individuals willing to do so. The state government says it will invest $9.3 million to attract more people, including migrants, to the Territory with families being offered more than $15,000 over five years to move to NT to work in high demand jobs.
This announcement is part of the Northern Territory Population Growth Strategy 2018-2028, where the government hopes to add 21,000 new jobs and $10.4 billion to the NT’s economy in the next decade. They say, immigration is the key to jobs and growth in the state. The incentives include relocation costs, one-off local spending benefit and retention bonus and will be made available to individuals, couples and families willing to move to NT. If yo are interested, Equiborder can assist you and your family moving to the Northern Territory. Singles will receive $3000, couples will receive $6000 and families will receive $7000 as a relocation bonus.
The minimum score an invitation was issued for in this round continued to be at 70 points for this year. Which means that there were enough Expressions of Interest lodged previously with a score of 70 points or above, and EOIs with a score of 65 points were NOT issued any invitations again in this round.
The competition remains strong and it is highly recommended that applicants seriously consider maximising their points test scores to improve their prospects of receiving an invitation, Equiborder can assist applicants with significant advice to boost their scores.
